Since 1888, The House of Metaxa is on a journey to offer a one-of-a-kind amber spirit. Born in Greece, from a fascinating marriage between Greek Muscat wines, fine aged wine distillates and aromatic Mediterranean botanicals, METAXA delivers a unique sensorial tasting experience with fruity and sweet yet intense flavours. METAXA is neither a cognac nor a brandy; it defies conventions standing in a category of its own, an invitation to “Taste the Unexpected”.
The Treasure of Samos
At the very heart of METAXA’s exceptional smoothness is the prized Muscat wine of Samos. A jewel in the Aegean Sea, Samos spans 478 km2 boasting luxurious vegetation, as well as exceptional vineyards. The vineyards are divided into garden-sized plots, where grapes are tended and harvested by hand.
The grapes benefit from the perfect amount of sunshine, a mineral soil and low humidity, endowing the Muscat wines with generous aromas and concentrated flavours, placing them among the most aromatic wines in the world.
The art of creating METAXA
Konstantinos Kalpaxidis, first makes his selection of the Muscat wines from Greece, chosen for their aromatic concentration and intensity. He then chooses the fine wine distillates for their character and elegance. The fruit of nature and the work of time, enhanced by the devotion and talent of people – that is the philosophy of the House of Metaxa.
The Muscat wines and wine distillates are aged separately in oak casks until he decides they are ready to be married. A bouquet of Mediterranean botanicals brings the final touch.
The words of the Metaxa Master: ” Enjoying a sip of METAXA is a unique experience of flavour and smoothness for your senses, one to be shared and appreciated in the presence of good company. “
Born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece, Konstantinos (Kostis) Kalpaxidis joined the House of Metaxa in 2016, after completing his degrees in Agronomy and Oenology and having acquired valuable experience in winemaking across Europe. As a Deputy Metaxa Master, Kostis trained under Constantinos Raptis the fifth Metaxa Master, before taking over the role of Metaxa Master in 2024.
With a deep-rooted love for oenology and terroir, Kostis is passionately leading the House of Metaxa's efforts towards the sustainable transformation of the Samos vineyard. His commitment to innovation and tradition culminated in his first original creation, METAXA 5 Stars Greek Orange, in 2022. In 2025, Kostis presented METAXA's first award winning ready-to-drink cocktails which marked the House's entry into the category. As the sixth Metaxa Master, Kostis continues to uphold the House's elevated quality standards while advancing its vision for a new generation of admirers around the world.
