METAXA – The Original Greek Spirit

Like all Rémy Cointreau Group brands, METAXA is rooted in the depths of a terroir unlike any other: that of Samos, a Greek island which lies in the Aegean Sea.

The Treasure of Samos

At the very heart of METAXA’s exceptional smoothness is the prized Muscat wine of Samos. A jewel in the Aegean Sea, Samos spans 478 km2 boasting luxurious vegetation, as well as exceptional vineyards. The vineyards are divided into garden-sized plots, where grapes are tended and harvested by hand.

The grapes benefit from the perfect amount of sunshine, a mineral soil and low humidity, endowing the Muscat wines with generous aromas and concentrated flavours, placing them among the most aromatic wines in the world.

The art of creating METAXA

Constantinos Raptis, our Metaxa Master, carefully selects the noblest, most aromatic Muscat wines and sets them aside for his future blends. The fruit of nature and the work of time, enhanced by the devotion and talent of people – that is the philosophy of the House of Metaxa.

One by one, he chooses the best grape distillates – those most able to impart the smoothness that is so sought after for METAXA and patiently matures them in oak casks.

It is only when he considers that time has done its work that Costas Raptis blends the grape distillates and the Muscat wines, adding a secret bouquet of Mediterranean herbs and rose petals.

Constantinos (Costas) has a number of METAXA creations under his belt, including METAXA 12 Stars and, more recently, METAXA ANGELS’ Treasure.

Costas is passionate about oenology and terroir, and is a great expert in the world of spirits. Thus, equipped with his degree in Chemistry and Oenology from the University of Athens, he joined METAXA. That was more than 25 years ago. The fifth Metaxa Master since 1888, he is the custodian of the secrets of the House, and the man who ensures the consistency of METAXA’s particularly unique character, thereby, bringing to life the singular smoothness of this spirit.
