Corporate and Environmental Responsibility of Rémy Cointreau: a concrete vision, shared commitments

Following the ratification of the Global Compact Charter, Rémy Cointreau is continuing its commitment to be an ambassador of good practice of this worldwide undertaking in the field of human rights, labour standards, the environment and the fight against corruption. As a member of the association "Forum des Amis du pacte mondial en France", Rémy Cointreau adheres to and shares the ten principles of the charter regularly with its employees and partners. The concept of corporate and environmental responsibility is thus diffused within the company, but also upstream and downstream of its sphere of operation, vis-à-vis its clients, suppliers and all its stakeholders.

Rémy Cointreau has always shown a growing intention to link the development of its activity to an acute sense of responsibility, combined with concrete, reasoned actions, in favour of an ethical approach to our activity, preservation of the environment and the professional development of our employees.

In conjunction with our adhesion to the Global Compact, over the past year Rémy Cointreau has formalised a Charter of Corporate and Environmental Responsibility, organised around six main themes and six major commitments, covering all facets of our activities.

Respect for the principles of the Global Compact and their diffusion among our employees and partners are fully embodied in these six commitments:

The actions we implement on all of these themes are set out in our Sustainable Development annual report which will be available at the end of July 2008. This document will then be circulated among our stakeholders and can be viewed on our Internet site.

The six themes of Rémy Cointreau’s Corporate and Environmental Responsibility policy (CER)

Wine-growing: Certification and sharing of the environmental policy

Engaged for the past several years in a procedure of protecting the environment, in 2007 Rémy Cointreau obtained the "Agriculture Raisonnée" [Integrated Agriculture] certification for its Cognac wine-growing domains. After carrying out an environmental diagnosis, we directed our efforts towards waste management and eliminating and reducing the use of fertilisers.
The treatment of vinicultural effluents is now autonomous following the creation of special treatment plants. Viticultural effluents are also subjected to innovative treatments which respect the environment.
This certification perfectly embodies our economic requirements, our priority on quality and responsible cultivation methods. It is the result of the constant efforts of our teams and our suppliers.
Within the framework of its Global Compact commitment and its intention to be an ambassador of good practice, Rémy Cointreau has made its wine-growing domains available to regional players for different experiments and training courses, particularly in respect of protecting the environment.

Example of associated indicator:
Wine-growing domains/degree of compliance with the "Viticulture raisonnée" reference 99%

Supplier Relations: A procedure of shared responsibility with suppliers

For the past three years, Rémy Cointreau’s general terms and conditions of purchase have been based on our Global Compact commitment and therefore include a clause relating to respect for the principles of corporate and environmental responsibility.

The wording of the Purchase Charter in 2007 supports the procedure by laying down the rules of conduct for purchasing negotiations and decisions. To that end the audits carried out at our suppliers take into account their social and environmental procedures, with a specific rating system which, if necessary, leads to the implementation of progress plans.
Furthermore, since 2007 Rémy Cointreau has participated in the Pan European Forest Certification scheme (PEFC) which aims to preserve the "wood" resource within the framework of sustainably managed forests. The majority of purchases of vats is PEFC certified as is the paper used for the publication of many communication media.
Rémy Cointreau also supports its suppliers in their corporate and environmental commitments, in particular when they lead to adhesion to the Global Compact. This support was effective in 2007 with our main barrel supplier.
Example of associated indicator:

  • Level of PEFC certified barrels 100%

Quality/Security/Environment: A deliberate procedure of certification and decisive action to preserve the environment

Rémy Cointreau’s Quality/Security/Environment (QSE) policy is formalised in an internal charter updated in 2007, which now includes six major commitments:

  • Product and service quality
  • Product traceability
  • la pérennité des savoir-faire,
  • Continued existence of know-how
  • Reduction of environmental impacts
  • Protection of persons and goods
  • Ensuring an efficient consumer service.

Respect for these commitments is consolidated by two main objectives in terms of certification, continuous improvement of quality and protection of the environment:

  • preservation of the environment and environmental certification of the production sites.
The ISO 14001 certification of the Cognac and Angers sites was confirmed by the annual follow-up audits which did not detect any anomaly, thereby guaranteeing the satisfactory functioning of the environmental management systems deployed at these two sites.

The harmonisation of the ISO 14001 indicators continued at all the Rémy Cointreau sites, in particular with regard to waste management and recycling. Specific actions were also implemented concerning the updating of the Carbon balance of Rémy Cointreau France (measurement of CO2 emissions), optimisation of our energy consumption at the Angers site through the setting up of centralised technical management of energy (CTM) and reduction of our water consumption at the Cognac site.
  • food safety, guaranteed by the HACCP standard and the deployment of ISO standard 22000 with certifications of the Angers, Reims and Cognac sites scheduled for 2008, 2009 and 2010 respectively.

Numerous projects implemented by Rémy Cointreau in favour of preservation of the environment constitute concrete proof of our constant intention to act:

  • plan for reduction of CO2 emissions over 3 years
  • limitation of inter-site trips by more frequent use of videoconferencing and car pooling
  • integration of the "High Environmental Quality" procedure for the construction of new buildings
  • gradual replacement of vehicles by more environmentally friendly equipment
  • optimisation of water treatment equipment
  • enhancement of waste sorting
  • reduction of energy consumption by developing centralised energy management systems
  • the creation of an internal "Eco-Gestures" directory aimed at reducing daily consumption of energy, water and paper
  • the launch of the product "Ecoconception" project, to search for innovative solutions which respect the environment.

Examples of associated indicators:

  • Annual electricity consumption 13900 MWh
  • Annual water consumption 122000 m3
  • Annual volume of effluents 9600 m3
  • Level of waste sorting 90%

Marketing and Commercial Ethics: Irreproachable marketing ethics in terms of principles and transparency

In conjunction with its activity, special attention is paid to Rémy Cointreau’s marketing and communication.
Besides its compliance with the regulations in force, the Group maintains its commitments in several national and international prevention organisations.

The responsible communication charter, re-issued in 2007, remains the internal reference for validating all communication campaigns. Widely shared, it encourages the Group’s brands to promote responsible consumption of our products.

Relations with consumers have also become a vector of progress, by maintaining close links with our distributors and clients, who increasingly adhere to Rémy Cointreau’s practices in terms of prevention, environmental impact, traceability and ecoconception.
By responding to these new questions, the Consumer Department is making regular progress in terms of reliability, reactivity and reputation.

Example of associated indicator

  • Annual rating of the Consumer Department (national survey) 15.5/20

Human Resources: Attention to and professional development of our employees associated with the strategy of the Group.

The agreement signed in 2007 with all the trade union organisations on projected job and skills management marks an important step forward in the company’s human resources policy. The aim is to set up actions which anticipate career changes and to provide professional development of our employees in line with the company’s demands and requirements.
This approach is combined with an important training policy, the guidelines of which were redefined at the end of 2007 around major issues such as guaranteeing the continuity of know-how (setting up of a plan for the monitoring and management of key positions).
The training of our employees was complemented this year by the development of a new tool: the "development action plan". This plan enables each employee to manage their career development.

In line with a policy of listening and social proximity, Rémy Cointreau promotes a culture of continuous progress at its sites by encouraging our teams to express their ideas. Many improvements in terms of quality, technical and commercial organisation and safety have been made thanks to the vigilance and creativity of our employees.

Examples of associated indicators:

  • Number of training hours dedicated annually to CSR 5,150 hours
  • Workforce trained annually in security 780 people
  • Annual number of meetings with staff representatives 98 meetings

Sustainable development of territories: An ongoing mission to raise awareness and share good practices

Rémy Cointreau is developing many exchanges with higher education establishments by contributing its vision of careers in sustainable development. By pooling ideas with these establishments the corporate realities can be incorporated in training programmes.
The students are also taken to visit Rémy Cointreau production sites from the angle of sustainable development.
Involved in local initiatives, Rémy Cointreau is a player at different events aimed at raising awareness of sustainable development, intended for local and regional companies and authorities.

In conjunction with our Global Compact commitment, all these events are opportunities for exchanges and sharing of experiences with young graduates, managers of small and medium-sized enterprises, local players and the wider public. They thus participate fully in gaining awareness of the importance of sustainable development in Rémy Cointreau’s activity.

Once again this year, Rémy Cointreau’s employees mobilised strongly in the joint actions of the Second Chance Foundation to assist many people in a situation of extreme job insecurity. These people benefited from psychological, technical or financial support in bringing their job creation projects to a satisfactory conclusion.

Examples of associated indicators:

  • Annual number of speeches at conferences, workshops-debates dedicated to sharing good CSR practice Participated 15 times
  • Annual number of wine growers informed and made aware of CSR 430 people

Conclusions and prospects:

Thanks to its different commitments as a result of its policy of corporate and environmental responsibility, Rémy Cointreau follows a procedure of ongoing progress which involves all of its employees and partners.
The optimisation of our practices causes us to improve constantly, with specific objectives for the next few months concerning the development of wine-growing with high environmental value, the reduction of our energy consumption and carbon emissions, ecodesign of our products and building a responsible dialogue with our stakeholders.

Responsible development policy and commercial strategy are inseparable: it is the men and women of Rémy Cointreau who are their players and ambassadors.
In this way Rémy Cointreau demonstrates its willingness to move forward with conviction and application towards responsible and sustainable development.
